Cravings: Comfort Food

by Editorial Staff--South Jersey Magazine
Comfort Food
With the cold in the air and a chill in our bones, we set out to find some upscale versions of the kind of dishes we all grew up eating. Here are five updated takes that are sure to warm you up this winter.

Braddock’s: Mac ‘N Cheese
Here you can build your own version, adding items like lobster, andouille sausage or roasted red peppers to the three-cheese combination. 39 S. Main St., Medford, (609) 654-1604

West Side Gravy: Meatloaf Sandwich
This timeless classic is reinvented by first wrapping the beef in smoked bacon before adding a pinot noir sauce and serving on a rustic loaf. 714 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, (856) 854-3444

Dream Cuisine Café: Raclette and Prosciutto Melt
This nosh is a creative take on a ham and cheese sandwich. 1990 Route 70 E., Cherry Hill, (856) 751-2800

Ritz Seafood: Seafood Pot Pie
This pot pie comes by way of the sea, packing shrimp, scallops, lump crab and a lobster sauce into a flaky puff pastry. 910 Haddonfield-Berlin Road, Voorhees, (856) 566-6650

Toscana; Filet Mignon Panini
There are run-of-the-mill steak sandwiches in area spots everywhere you look. Except here. 127 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill, (856) 478-2288

Fantasy Feast
One day. Three meals. Total satisfaction.

Breakfast
Omelettes from Amy’s Omelette House in Burlington.
If you love omelettes like we do, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Especially here, where there are 220 combinations to choose from. Our current favorite: the “Southern Jersey,” made up of pork roll, tomato, onions and American cheese.

Lunch
Barbecue chicken melt from Marlton Tavern in Marlton.
Chicken grilled just right, topped with cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, plenty of sauce and served on a better-than-average roll.

Appetizer
Bang bang tempura shrimp from Terra Nova in Washington Township.
These jumbo crustaceans are lightly battered and get an extra boost from the accompanying sweet chili dipping sauce.

Entrée
Pistachio-crusted salmon with blackberry sauce from Nonna’s in Cherry Hill.
Seems like an odd combination—just stop asking questions and dig in, you’ll thank us later.

Dessert
Ice cream donut at Fuji in Haddonfield.
Here, fried ice cream mingles with cinnamon and honey for a sweet finale.
