Cravings: Pleasing Pies

5 spot: Pleasing Pies
Is there a dessert that epitomizes summertime more than pie? We don’t think so. One could make a case for ice cream—but if you’re not already scooping the cold stuff onto a thick slice of pie, you don’t know what you’re missing. In this season of backyard barbecues and pool parties, you’ll want to check out these delectable offerings that just may have you skip the burgers and dogs and head right for dessert.

1. Pie Lady Café: Mixed Berry Pie. You’ll find all of summer’s bounty—blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries— married together in a half shortening, half butter crust finished off with a crunchy topping. 9 East Main St., Moorestown, (856) 778-7497

2. McMillan’s Bakery: Apple Pie. This bakery has been around since the late ’30s so they know a thing or two about this American classic, dolled up with a lattice top and decorative flowers made of dough. 15 Haddon Ave., Westmont, (856) 854-3094

3. Classic Cake: Key Lime Pie. Long known for their artisan cakes and cookies, don’t undervalue the pies here, like this specialty with a graham cracker crust and Key lime custard. 480 Evesham Rd., Cherry Hill, (856) 751-5448; 100 Hurffville-Cross Keys Rd., Sewell, (856) 262-7400

4. Randolph’s Bakery and Fine Confections: Lemon Meringue Pie. While anxiously waiting for their new Maple Shade location to open, head to Marlton for a made-from-scratch buttery crust, lemon filling and fluffy meringue topping that will sate any sweet tooth. 300 E. Greentree Rd., Marlton, (856) 983-0550

5. Johnson’s Corner Farm: Peach Pie. The folks at Johnson’s use only the best peaches on the farm, resulting in a great-tasting pie fresh from the oven. 133 Church Rd., Medford, (609) 654-8643

Fantasy Feast: One day. Three meals. Total satisfaction.

Breakfast: Eggs Chesapeake from Station House Restaurant in Haddon Heights. Poached eggs are served over jumbo lump crab cakes and coated in an Old Bay-seasoned hollandaise sauce for a clever take on the traditional eggs Benedict.

Lunch: Brisket sandwich from G.G.’s Restaurant in Mount Laurel. The slow-roasted beef brisket is the star here, but don’t overlook the brioche roll with red onion jam: it helps elevate the flavor profile.

Appetizer: Shrimp pancetta from Giumarello’s in Westmont. Jumbo shrimp. Horseradish. Wrapped in bacon. Need we say more?

Entrée: Lasagna from Luna Rossa Biagio Lamberti in Turnersville. This authentic homemade specialty is a medley of meat (ground veal, pork, beef and sausage), ricotta cheese and marinara sauce.

Dessert: Mango cream and passion fruit mousse from Siri’s Thai French Cuisine in Cherry Hill. This dessert selection is the perfect way to cool down during a hot summer day.

Great Outdoors
A tropical vacation may be tempting. But if you only have an hour to spare, the new outdoor courtyard at Bistro di Marino is a worthy Plan B. The red brick patio with teak furniture, terricotta planters packed with herbs and tomatoes, a waterfall and a jazz soundtrack is among our new favorite places to eat al fresco. 429 Haddon Ave., Collingswood, (856) 858-1700
